Dispositivos de creación para una hospitalidad democrática

Democracy to Come

Through art, a world of possibilities opens up—one that helps us rethink and imagine different, possible worlds, and invites us to consider new forms of participation and unity. In this piece, the T-shirt acts as a hospitable agent; it is the dispositif that welcomes the other in order to work together. It functions as a body onto which, as it moves through public space, images of struggle and reconciliation are inscribed—where the path toward a democracy is embroidered, one that leads us into the realm of the impossible, and through citizen participation seeks to foster a sense of collectivity.

Based on a series of actions carried out during marches in Mexico City, participants were asked to choose a label bearing the slogans “Make it possible” and “Do the impossible.” By placing the label on white clothing, the idea of the bond being traced through accompanying one another was reinforced; among the moving bodies, a single body took shape—heterogeneous and singular, yet articulated.

The T-shirt for five heads functions as a symbol of a force in tension for these times of polarization and ideological division; it is a silent cry composed of slogans in defense of democracy, understood as a fabric in the making—woven through the seams of difference and stitched together among subjectivities toward a future free of violence, mended through hospitality.

Action carried out in November 2022. One T-shirt for five heads. Five people in a single body occupying the streets under the same call for democracy and freedom. Hospitality embraced those moving bodies that began to identify with the demonstrators. This body—the T-shirt—became something people would photograph and delight in upon seeing the giant garment.
